Plea From a Cat Named Virtue (Like the Weakerthans Song)

If there's anyone still up there
Spirits or gods, a sympathetic fairy
Is this what you had in mind?
I'm trying to reach for compassion, love
Fairy tale lessons read to us so long ago
Where's this happily ever after?
Have we forgotten how to be
Like real human beings
The world wants no part, just turn a cheek
Frightened young mothers who can't afford meds
Boys sleeping on park benches
Broken homes that produce broken people
Families too poor to afford bread
I've befriended them all
And the fortunate, they still want more
Sending sons and daughters, lovers, friends
Off to fight an oil war
Religion is no longer a comfort, it's a weapon
We'll all be dead before we find out who's right
Does it really matter?
Nirvana, Heaven, The Other Side
We're all looking for a better place
Maybe we should stop looking
And make use of what we have.
